Millions of staff not returning to the office

Following a BBC questionnaire, fifty of the biggest UK employers have no plans to return all staff to the office full-time soon.

Of those questioned, 24 firms said that they did not have any plans to return workers to the office. However, 20 have opened their offices for staff unable to work from home.

One of the main reasons given for the lack of substantial return was businesses could not see a way of accommodating large numbers of staff while social distancing regulations were still in place.

The questionnaire findings also state that some smaller businesses are deciding to abandon their offices altogether, once again not being able to obey with social distancing rules is a factor, but also not forcing staff onto public transport and the money saved on rent and utilities were the reasons given.

At GHM we have welcomed back those wishing to work from our offices. Following a company survey most staff were happy to return following the Covid-19 health and safety practices put in place. There has been a real buzz around the office over the last few weeks as colleagues return. However, there will remain a more permanent need remote working, and we have business telephone and collaborative solutions to facilitate flexible working practices.

The accountancy firm PwC have said that office space is a must, particularly for younger colleagues. They stated that colleagues working at the end of their bed or on kitchen worktops, is not sustainable or healthy in the long term.
